Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), a type of somatic stem cell, can be isolated from adipose tissue, bone marrow, umbilical cord, and dental pulp etc. In 2006, Dominici et al. defined human MSCs based on three criteria1): (1) Adhesion to plastic culture vessels; (2) Expression of positive markers CD105, CD73, and CD90, and non-expression of negative markers CD45, CD34, HLA-Class II (DR), CD14, CD11b, CD79a, and CD19; and (3) Ability to differentiate into osteocytes, adipocytes, and chondrocytes. MSCs are known for their excellent self-proliferation abilities, and possess the capacity to differentiate into a variety of cells, including not only bone, cartilage, and fat, but also liver2, 3, 4, 5) . MSCs do not express MHC Class-II proteins3); possess immunomodulatory functions6) ; and accumulate at diseased sites, secreting various cytokines and growth factors4) , which promotes tissue regeneration and repair5, 7) . Additionally, adipose tissue-derived MSCs (ATMSCs) can be obtained in large quantities through relatively less invasive methods such as liposuction 8) . This product consists of cells that have been subcultured (two passages) after being isolated from the adipose tissue of adult ICR mice treated with collagenase9). This product has been confirmed to differentiate into osteocytes, adipocytes, and chondrocytes (Note: Verification of surface antigen markers has not been conducted.
